Anagārika Vilas has been practicing meditation for many years to clear latent unskillful tendencies which come to the surface when one develops awareness of the mind through anāpanasati and foundation of mindfulness. He started replacing the bad qualities of mind with the good qualities and developing them by following the Buddha path and reflecting on the progress.
Since he was able to understand Pāḷi, various insights as indicated in various sutta’s started to appear. You may go through his awakening moment
He then understood through proper discernment on other tradition meditation methods which uses “breath or chanting” to calm the “senses” would be good but makes one attached to it and does not help in detachment., Without this, it will not lead to disenchantment, dispassion, cessation of suffering, being peaceful, insight, awakening and nibbana.
By constant practice, he was able to understand and experience nibbana which is nothing but “giving up of conditions”.
Some of the sutta’s that helped his progress are:
Mahavedalla Sutta, Culavedalla Sutta, Indriyabhavana Sutta, Phenapindupama Sutta, Mahanidana Sutta, Jhana Vibhanga of Abhidhamma and many others of the same kind.
Why Anagārika as a title?
Anagārika truly means “homeless” and through his insight found that none of the senses truly have a home and the mind perceives to be living in a home. Having understood this, he was able to disconnect the concept of home and family in his mind and that helped him to tremendously in walking on the path of dhamma
Buddha’s meditation would involve:
1. Removing unskillful qualities in oneself – not arisen and arisen
2. Developing skilful qualities – both not arisen and arisen
This will help one to develop Jhāna’s which involves developing and experiencing vitakko, vicāro, pīti, sukhaṁ, cittassekaggatā
Vitakka would involve developing Samma Sankappo or proper determination to remove unskillful and replace with skilful
vicāra would involve constant thinking on dhamma to remove unskillful and developing skilful
pīti would involve feeling inner joy of knowing the dhamma of relieving from unskillful qualities.
sukha would involve being happy, contented, relaxed, ever smiling and beyond worldly pleasure
cittassekaggatā would involve the mind to be in oneness with everything around thus being in equanimity all the time.
