रागादिरोगान् सततानुषक्तानशेषकायप्रसृतानशेषान्॥१॥
औत्सुक्यमोहारतिदान् जघान योऽपूर्ववैद्याय नमोस्तुतस्मैः

This starting mantra in ashtanga hridayam (अष्टांगहृदयम्) of Vagbhatta is treated as “mangalacaranam” and many people do not know the deeper meaning except for reciting in Ayurvedic colleges and also said by physicians in the morning before start of their “chikitsa” or treatment of diseases relating to patients.
It would be nice to understand the deeper meaning of this fantastic verse which will eliminate the samsara itself, thus removing the “roga” or “disease” of birth and death.
Before we begin this, let us understand that Vagbhatta was follower of Gotama Buddha and Buddha’s verse in this regard is of high prominence since “ragadi rogan” is completely connected with it.

Arōgyā paramā lābhā
Santuṭṭhiparamaṃ dhanaṃ
vissāsa paramā ñāti
Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ sukhaṃ

(Dhammapada verse 204)
In the above link, the meaning is very surface level and hence I would provide deeper meaning of this verse as well.
Before we dwell further into explanation, let us have proper meaning of 3 words:

1. देह (Deha) = दहति इति देह (that which burns away moment to moment is body/deha. If we see, this body gets burned up moment to moment and if the temperature is increased, then it is called as “jvara” or “fever” which burns the entire body.

2. शरीर (Sharira) शीर्यते अनेन इति शरीरं (that which gets decayed moment to moment is sharira or again in English – body. One can see that the food when partaken decays in succession again making one hungry and thirsty)

3. काय (kaaya) चीयते प्रशस्त दोशधातुमलैरिति काय: (that which is a collection of dosha, dhatu and mala which keeps on disintegrating moment to moment is kaya)

Let us first start with deeper meaning of Ragadi rogan
Deeper meaning of Ragadi rogan:
Sensual Desire, Hatredness and Delusion (raga, dvesha and moha) are THREE most dreadful nature which creates diseases in body through mind aspiring for it. This has the ability to continue moment to moment in this life and future lives to come as well without any break.

Also, the disease covers the entire collection of cells not only in humans, but all beings as such and is flowing with it.
When the diseases manifest, it makes one restless, worried, anxious and is deluded completely and creates dissatisfaction with oneself thus causing more problems than the manifested disease due to association with sensual desires, hatredness and delusional attitude and not understanding the true nature of all phenomenal things of this world.
If a physician would know the law of conditionality of how the disease manifest in any being due to association with raga, dvesha and moha, I would bow down to such a physician who has completely understood the cause and hence is able to remove the effect.
Having understood ragadi rogan, let us get into deeper meaning of Dhammapada verse 204:
Disease free (free from raga, dvesha and moha) is supreme profit;
Contentment (of 4 lodgings: food, shelter, clothing and medicine) is supreme wealth;
Trustworthiness is the supreme refuge or caretaker;
Unbinding (mind and consciousness) is supreme happiness


If we were to connect Dhammapada with Ragadi Rogan, it would be like this:

In this verse and also in Raga and Roga, we can find that once sensual desire, hatred tendencies and delusion of “I’m existing” is removed, it turns out to be without any roga or disease since one understands the main goal of life rather than just supplying things for sensual enjoyment. This makes one content with all that he has, understands the purpose of this life and ends future existences since raga, dvesha and moha are the fuel for future existences as well.

Once he has seen it for himself, he becomes his own supporter or refuge and attains nibbana or unbinding of mind with consciousness as the consciousness has been constantly following the mind which is filled with raga, dvesha and moha. Now that is no longer there, it gets unbound.
Now we can come to word by word meaning of both the verse:

Ragadi rogan sathathanu shakthan
ashesha kaya prasruthan asheshan
Outhsukhya moha arathi jhaghana
yo apoorva vaidyaya namostu tasmayi
Ragadi = Raga, dvesha and moha
rogan = that which becomes the cause for the disease
satata = always
anu = in accordance to
shaktan = capable of; creating possibility
asesha = without residue
kaya = collection (collection of various organs, skin, waste and cells or mala, dhatu and dosha)
prasruthan = manifestation of these (diseases)
aseshan = without any break and leaving any organ not impacted of all living beings
Outsukhya = restlessness / anxiety / worry / excessive desire to change
moha = delusion of how the disease manifested in the first place
arati = dissatisfaction, feeling of let down, uncomfortable, not inclined to one particular place and time of these manifestation which caused the dissatisfaction in the being
jaghana = confusion and concern
yo = that
apoorva = rare (one who has understood the cause of roga which is raga etc.,)
vaidyaya = physician
namostu = bow down, prostrate
tasmai = that person

Now, let us turn our attention to word by word meaning of Dhammapada verse 204
arogya = a + roga + ya = without any disease (getting rid of raga, dvesha, moha)
paramam = supreme
labham = profitable
santuti = contentment (refer to santutisutta)
paramam = supreme
dhanam = wealth
vissasa = trustworthy ; trustful; belief
paramam = supreme
natha = refuge, caretaker, supporter
nibbana = unconditioned, unbound [ of mind and consciousness]
paramam = supreme
sukham = comfort, pleasure, bliss, happiness, enjoyment

    I enjoyed your exposition of the shloka Raagaadi Rogan… I would like to offer a more accurate translation of some parts.
    1. जघान means “has struck down or has destroyed”
    जघान is the लिट् लकार Perfect (past) tense of the Dhatu हन् https://sanskrit.inria.fr/cgi-bin/SKT/sktconjug.cgi?lex=MW&q=han%231&c=1

    2. औत्सुक्यमोहारतिदान् means those that give or cause औत्सुक्यमोहारति
    The suffix – दा means gives or causes, e.g., in वन्दे मातरम् we have सुखदाम् वरदाम्; here it is द्वितीया विभक्ति, एकवचन. The बहुवचन form is औत्सुक्यमोहारतिदान्
    In summary: May that rare physician be bowed to, who has struck down रागादिरोगान् सततानुषक्तानशेषकायप्रसृतानशेषान् औत्सुक्यमोहारतिदान्
